Best Wireless Keyboard

Tuesday 23 February 2010 @ 5:38 pm

Best wireless keyboard – Which one? The trend is becoming pretty clear; ten years from now, computers will come in two basic flavors: the laptop (or whatever they’ll be calling it then) – a unitary box that unfolds and expands in ingenious ways, but still stays in one piece – and office equipment where all the peripherals are free to wander around untethered. The Best Wireless Keyboards, mice and trackballs, wireless printers… Yes, the day is rapidly approaching when the RF flux in a typical “boiler room” with twenty computers going at once will be enough to light up fluorescent tubes and cook a hot-dog. But if that doesn’t bother you, and you’re not scared off by a price that’s typically three to four times that of a comparably equipped cabled keyboard, manufacturers are prepared to accomodate you. And how!

Your first selection should probably be the data transmission method. The best wireless keyboards come in infrared (IR) and radio frequency (RF) types; some even “speak” both. IR technology is basically the same as what is used in the ubiquitous remote control boxes for your TV, stereo, air conditioner and so forth. One manufacturer even offers a package of a wireless keyboard and a remote controller – presumably for turning your peripherals on and off. IR is nice for avoiding that not-so-hypothetical hot room scenario. The main disadvantage is that it’s basically line-of-sight – though many of you know tricks that allow you to bounce your remote’s beam off a brightly painted wall or a mirror and change channels on a TV that’s facing away from you. Still, if your favorite place to rest your keyboard doesn’t have a view of the CPU or adapter, that might be a problem. RF, which typically means 2.4 GHz “Bluetooth” technology familiar to high-end cellular telephone users, doesn’t have that drawback.

Next comes the hard part: choosing a package. Typically, your CPU interface is a box that plugs into a USB port – and that’s where commonality ends. You can buy just a keyboard – standard layout or ergonomic? Or a keyboard and mouse, or a keyboard with touchpad. Some makers even take advantage of the excess badwidth available to let you plug other peripherals – typically audio – into the keyboard instead of the CPU. Makes sense if you’re Skyping while wandering from desk to workbench to wetbar.

Both IR and RF technologies are already in use for mass market items, so they are not inherently expensive. The main cost-enhancing factor for the moment is probably the relatively low market volume for wireless peripherals. As volume grows, it’s reasonable to expect prices to drop. Already some packagers of complete systems are building wireless technology into their CPU’s and supplying wireless mice and keyboards as standard equipment.

I buy your $5000 computer and you give me a trackball mouse?

Not that I actually expected anything else, but I just bought a new HP server for $5000, and along with it they send me a decent keyboard and a crappy trackball mouse. I didn't even know they still made trackball mice! Does anyone think HP should step up their game and at least provide a somewhat better
